The Green Lawn in Assisi

A reflection on peace and love from Assisi.

When we traveled to Assisi we walked to the top of the hill overlooking the Church of St. Francis. Looking at that grassy hill, I just wanted to roll down it like a kid. St. Francis has always been important to me, so I want to share a little of his wisdom.

The “Song of St. Francis” is a wonderful reflection that we can use each day to better ourselves. If you are not familiar with the song, it starts like this:

Lord make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy

— The Song of St. Francis

How can an ancient song help in modern times? Ask yourself a few easy questions and take a moment to reflect on how you are doing with each of these:

  • Do you treat others with individual respect or do you lump people in groups?
  • Do you offer forgiveness to others that have wronged you?
  • Can you keep a positive attitude, even when you have a hard day?
  • Can you find moments of joy in times of sadness?

What would life look like if everyone asked themselves those questions, and acted accordingly? I think we would see a whole lot more peace and love in the world if we did.

Like other ancient wisdom, the Song of St. Francis still has relevance in our modern times. What other pieces of ancient wisdom do you carry with you in your every day life?
