Beach Sunflower
Beauty with a purpose.
The dunes on our beaches may seem like an inconvenience at times. If you’ve got arms full of beach supplies, the long walk down the path may be frustrating. But those paths include some of the most important ecology for our beaches.
It was a bright sunny morning when I took this photo, and the flower’s growth pattern reminded me of how we have to learn to roll with changes.
This sunflower loves to grow in the sandy soil of the dunes in South Florida. It has a sprawling growth pattern, and spreads quickly. That is an important trait for a dune stabilizing plant. The sands shift rapidly with the weather and this hardy little plant adapts quickly.
